《<自然>百年科学经典(英汉对照平装版)第二卷》是一套自然科学论文精选集中的一卷,收录了国际综合性科学期刊《自然》从1931年到1933年期间发表过的经典科学论文103篇,这些文章由《自然》杂志主编遴选,由《自然》杂志的资深编辑为每篇文章撰写编者按,并由国内相关领域的专家翻译成中文并审订。全书通过原汁原味的科学论文,回顾了自然科学各个领域(生物、物理、化学、天文、地球科学等)波澜壮阔的发展史。该册为物理学分册。

Nature: The Living Record of Science (second volume) is a volume of a collection of natural science essays. It contains 103 essays published by the international academic journal Nature from 1931 to 1933, which are selected by the editor of Nature magazine. The senior editors of Nature magazine write editor’s notes for each essay, and then are translated into Chinese by experts in relevant fields in China. Through the original scientific papers, the book reviews the history of the development of various fields of natural science (biological, physical, chemical, astronomical, earth science, etc.). This volume is a branch of physics.

维克托·弗朗西斯·赫斯(1883 – 1964) ,奥地利-美国物理学家。发现并研究了宇宙射线因而荣获诺贝尔物理学奖。

罗伯特·安德鲁·密立根(1868 — 1953),美国实验物理学家。因为进行了一系列测定电子电荷以及光电效应的卓越工作,因而获得1923年诺贝尔物理学奖。

钱德拉塞卡拉·拉曼爵士(1888年-1970年),印度物理学家,1930年诺贝尔物理学奖获得者。因发现光通过透明物质时波长发生一定变化而获1930年诺贝尔物理学奖。这种现象现称拉曼散射(Raman scattering),是拉曼效应的结果。

Victor Franz Hess (24 June 1883 – 17 December 1964) was an Austrian-American physicist, and Nobel laureate in physics, who discovered cosmic rays.

Robert Andrews Millikan (March 22, 1868 – December 19, 1953) was an American experimental physicist honored with the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1923 for the measurement of the elementary electric charge and for his work on the photoelectric effect.

Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman (November 1888 – 21 November 1970) was an Indian physicist. He discovered that when light traverses a transparent material, some of the deflected light changes wavelength. This phenomenon, subsequently known as Raman scattering, which earned him the 1930 Nobel Prize for Physics.

在过去,所有的观测者一致认为,在宇宙超级辐射的总强度中,太阳没有任何值得注意的贡献。近年来,随着观测仪器灵敏度的不断增强,以及在不同国家、不同实验环境下进行的观测次数不断增多,于是有可能再一次研究由太阳造成的影响是不是可以完全忽略不计。

WHILE in former years all observers were agreed that the sun does not contribute any noticeable amount to the total intensity of the cosmic ultra-radiation, the increase in the sensitivity of the apparatus used within recent years, and the increase in the number of observations made at different stations and under different experimental conditions, makes it possible to investigate once more whether the influence of the sun is altogether negligible.
