William Sydney Porter (September 11, 1862—June 5, 1910), known by his pen name O. Henry, was an American writer. O. Henry's short stories are known for their wit, wordplay, warm characterization and clever twist endings. The best known ones are A Service of Love, The Cop and the Anthem, The Furnished Room, The Gift of the Magi and The Last Leaf, which help him win fame abroad.

He was a New Yorker. His whole ambition was to be noticed. He wanted to be conspicuous. He wanted people to point him out and bow to him, and tell others who he was.He said it had been the desire of his life always. He didn’t have but a million, so he couldn’t attract attention by spending money. He said he tried to get into public notice one time by planting a little public square on the east side with garlic for free use of the poor; but Carnegie heard of it, and covered it over at once with a library in the Gaelic language.

O. Henry's stories are gems of their kind; mellow, humorous, ironic, ingenious and shot through with that eminently salable quality known as 'human interest.'" —Bennet Cerf and Van Cartmell

What a shame. It tells exactly the reason why Ferguson would say in the beginning of the book that women are not suitable for graft. They are too sensitive and emotional which will be the most dangerous factor of their former graft. And in the end, Ferguson was the one who was fooled by the graft.

To realize his dream of being famous, Vaucross tried almost everything even hurting himself. But he still failed. Therefore, he came up with an idea which is bowing to a poor man and treat him as a gentleman. It seemed to be a good way to be known in this society which considered class concept as the most important thing.
